about

Hálde áhkku, spirit of the ancient ancestors dwelling in the shrouded mountains of Sapmi in the arctic regions of Scandinavia. This mythical female is depicted in the title track on the album Halde Ahkku - Mountain of Ancestors and forms the backdrop of the music released on the latest album by the group Tundra Electro.

Tundra Electro was started in 2017 by sami vocalist Inga-Maret Gaup-Juuso from the north of Finland and Oslo-based musician and producer Patrick Shaw Iversen. They quickly established themselves as one of the leading groups emerging from the pulsating music scene of Sapmi, touring throughout Scandinavia and Europe.

The music on the album is based on the traditional vocal style of the Sami people from the arctic regions of Scandinavia, the yoik, which is considered one of the oldest vocal traditions of Europe. Traditionally the yoik is performed a cappella but has gone through a huge transformation by Sami artists, renewing and developing the age-old tradition of the Sami people.

The album contains 9 predominantly female yoiks, some ancient dating back more than 100 years, and some new written by Ingá-Máret Gaup-Juuso. Gaup-Juuso is herself a reindeer herder living and working in the tundra of northern Finland when she is not touring with Tundra Electro. As both the language and the yoik is in danger of disappearing, she is very conscious about keeping the Sami traditions alive. The yoik was forbidden for decades in Scandinavia due to colonial and religious efforts to suppress the Sami culture and, astonishingly, still is in certain areas where religious fundamentalism still prevails.

What distinguishes the music of Tundra Electro is their unique combination of Sami yoik with classical Indian music, introduced by virtuoso violinist Harpreet Bansal. Together with their blend of electronics and improvised music performed by pioneer flutist Patrick Shaw Iversen and drummer par excellence Kenneth Ekornes, Tundra Electro has developed a distinct and totally unique sound and style.

All the music is composed, arranged, and produced by Patrick Shaw Iversen in collaboration with the band. Hálde áhkku – Mountain of Ancestors is released on Bugge Wesseltoft’s label Ok World Records/Jazzland Records and is the second album by Tundra Electro.

Ingá-Máret Gaup-Juuso - Yoik, vocal

Harpreet Bansal - Violin
Kenneth Ekornes - Drums, percussion

Ingá-Máret Gaup-Juuso – (yoik/vocals) – has established herself as an important voice in the new wave of young Sami artists with her powerful vocal style. Coming from the borderland between the far north of Finland and Norway, she grew up in a family with strong vocal traditions and, as her family has done for generations, also works as a reindeer-herder when she is not touring with her concerts. The life on the tundra, the vast open spaces, the reindeer herds and her Sami heritage are some of the most important sources of inspiration for her work with music.

In Tundra Electro she combines Sami vocal traditions from more than 100 years ago with modern music styles such as electronica, improvisational music and elements of Indian classical music. She is adamant about her work keeping the old Sami traditions and language alive and recently received the Finnish Larin Paraske Award 2016 for her work with Sami vocal traditions. She worked 2 years as traditional singer for the County of Troms in the north of Norway and won the 1st prize for best song at the Sami Easter Festival 2023 in Kautokeino, Norway.

Patrick Shaw Iversen – (flutes/electronics) – is a musician / composer / producer and one of the few flautists in Norway working with jazz and improvised music. Coming from a classical background studying for 6 years with principal flautist Olav Hox from the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, his interest for jazz and improvised music was sparked already in the early seventies. But feeling the urge to further expand and develop his direction as a flautist made him turn towards his newly found interest in the flute-music of western Java in order to incorporate a different way of musical thinking in terms of time, movement, phrasing and ornamentation into his own style of playing.

Combining this with his interest in electronics and live sampling, his new work with the contrabass-flute and his efforts to develop a different and modern sound for the flute, has given him a unique style and reputation as a true innovator of his instrument.

He is part of the Indonesian musician collective “SambaSunda” in West-Java/Indonesia where he composes and produces collaboration projects between Indonesian gamelan musicians and Norwegian jazz/electronica musicians. He has worked with musicians like Nils Petter Molvær, Sidsel Endresen, Bugge Wesseltoft, Inga Juuso, Ståle Storløkken, Torgrim Sollid and has toured through-out the world since 1977. He has composed numerous scores for theatre, film and dance productions, been commissioned for several festivals and released and participated on numerous CD productions.

Harpreet Bansal – (violin) - was trained from childhood in western classical music and by her father, Harbhajan S. Bansal, in Indian classical music. In 1999 she began her studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music (NAM) with the professors Ørnulf Boye Hansen and Harald Aadland. After graduating in 2003, Harpreet subsequently was accepted as a student of Ustad Ashraf Sharif Khan Poonchwalas, one of his generation ́s most prominent sitar players, who has since been her main tutor.

In 2019 she was soloist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra performing her composition “Jog”. In 2020 her work “Parvat” for violin, harmonium, tabla and orchestra was performed by the National Radio Orchestra of Norway (KORK). The music has since been released on the label LAWO Classics.

Harpreet leads her own Harpreet Bansal Band and is part of Combonations, Simin Tander New Quartet, JAR Ensemble in addition to Tundra Electro. She has performed numerous solo recitals in Norway, Europe, India and Taiwan. She released her first solo album, Samaya, in 2018 with outstanding reviews. The album was also nominated to the Norwegian Grammy. The last 2 years she worked with Karpe on their album Omar Sherrif.

Kenneth Ekornes – (drums/percussion/electronics) - born in Sykkylven in 1974 and studied percussion at the University of Agder, Kristiansand. Kenneth has the last two decades been one of Norway’s most attractive freelance drummers and percussionists. His great versatility and expertise has made him very attractive in several genres and has played with practically “everybody” in the Norwegian music scene.

He has been a regular member of Mari Boine Band, Desafinado for years, Trio De Janeiro and Gumbo. Kenneth is known for his personal expressions within multi-ethnical music and extensive use of electronics. Rikskonsertene have been an important source of work for many years and he has visited numerous Norwegian schools with several concert productions. Particularly his solo performance «Ekornes in 100!». Kenneth has been member of The Brazz Brothers since 2009.
